This weekend is the last one dealing with John chapter 6. In it we see the reaction of those who were listening to Jesus speak about the bread of life. We are told that many of the followers said, ‘this is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?’ Jesus replies to it by asking two questions — Does this upset you? What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before? He refers to the spirit giving life and then states that some do not believe. Many followers.and disciples leave him at this point. The Eucharist and the Ascension are fundamental to our faith. A lot of people find it hard to have faith in them. At the end of the passage he asks the Twelve a question: “What about you, do you want to go away too?” Peter answers – You have the message of eternal life and we believe, we know that you are the Holy One of God”. Jesus is the Holy One of God who is born, lives, suffers, dies, rises and ascends out of love for us and his Father: our hope rests in him and is nourished in the hearing of the Word and receiving him in the Eucharist.
