Ian Callanan, a well-established Irish composer, released his latest collection As Nighttime Falls, earlier this year. It is a setting of Night Prayer for each day of the week. The collection has been very well received so far. The accompanying CD is ideal for use by individuals or groups for prayer. Though primarily intended for Night Prayer, many of the hymns and psalms settings are equally suitable for use at Evening Prayer and in other contexts.
On Sunday 2 December Ian will be at Mount Melleray to present a workshop on As Nighttime Falls. On that day the monastic community will sing Vespers for the First Sunday of Advent at the earlier time of 3:15pm in the Abbey Church and the workshop, which will take place in the Lodge/Reception building, will begin at 4pm. It will conclude by 6pm and there will be light refreshments served after which Night Prayer for Sunday from As Nighttime Falls will be sung together with the monastic community at 6:30pm. Events will conclude by 7pm.
As the workshop coincides with the beginning of Advent it might provide a suitable opportunity to take a few hours away for prayer and music at Mount Melleray.
