Feast Days

Monday 9th, St. Ciaran, abbot, was born in Roscommon around 512. He came to Clonmacnois in January 545 where he founded a monastery which was to become one of the most renowned in Europe. He died at the age of thirty-three while the monastery was still being built.

Friday 13th, St. John Chrysostom, bishop and doctor of the Church, 347-407, one of the four great Grek Doctors, the ‘Golden-Mouthed’ preacher, was Archbishop of Constantinople. He incurred much opposition and died in Exile. Patron saint of preachers.

Saturday, 14th, The Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The discovery of the True Cross is dated to September 14th 320. On the 13th September 335, the churches on Calvary were dedicated and the cross that St. Helena discovered was venerated there the next day. the annual commemoration of that event has been celebrated since, in praise of the redemption won for us by Christ.
