This Sunday’s Gospel has Jesus praying and when he finishes, one of the disciples asks him to teach them how to pray. The result is the ‘Our Father’. It is prayed in every Mass. It is prayed in the morning and evening prayer of the Church, the Divine Office. It is prayed as we prepare to bury our loved ones and prayed during the Rite of Committal. It is an integral part of the Rosary. It forms the main structure of Part Four of the Catechism of the Catholic Church that provides our understanding of the spiritual life. People pray it in their private prayers and in different settings where a prayer may be needed. It is, at one and the same time, concise and rich in content.
