Because we are celebrating the Feast of the Assumption today, there is a shift in the Liturgy of the Word compared to the last three weeks. The readings focus on the feast day and the discussion of John chapter 6 is postponed for this week. So the verses 51-58 are not heard in church this year. The content of these verses repeats some lines that have been used already and also opens up the understanding of the relationship between Jesus and his Father and how that is mirrored in the relationship Jesus has with us. ‘As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will also draw life from me.’ He then goes on to restate the difference between Old and New — this is not like the bread your ancestors ate. They are dead. Those who eat ‘this’ bread will live for ever.
